Volunteers help bring a daily dose of fun to JCH

Activities form a crucial part of daily life here at JCH which wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated volunteers.

For the Activities Co-ordinator, Anita Despres it’s all about enabling residents and day care users to lead as normal a life as possible, by taking part in activities that make them feel capable and allow them to have fun.

In Anita’s words “It’s extremely rewarding to see the enjoyment on their faces during activities and to see their satisfaction at having achieved something for themselves. With the support of care staff and volunteers I try to put on a range of activities and outings for residents to enjoy each week, these can include playing bowls, painting, watching movies, helping to make jams & chutneys, being taken out for afternoon teas, picnics in the park and evening trips to the theatre. Highlights of the year for many are the off island holidays, which we are now, busy planning for this year. Past destinations have included France, London, Turkey and even a cruise on the Norwegian Fjords!”

This past week the residents have been avidly painting Easter decorations to be hung around the home. Handmade, with help from our volunteer Sissy, the Salt dough Easter Eggs, Easter Bunnies and Butterflies were personalised by the residents brightened up the dining room over the Bank Holiday weekend.

We have some wonderful volunteers that are considered a vital part of our team here at JCH, but we can never have enough! So if you, or someone you know would be able to offer us a few hours assistance each week, to help with baking, crafts, music sessions, games, to accompany residents on trips out and about, or even just sitting and talking to them about everyday life over a cup of tea, then please do get in touch
